Okay seriously this weekend was phenomenal for getting the old stuff, the old good stuff that is. After the thrilling morning on Friday Sciarrino, Brain, Melissa (his girlfriend) and I headed to the McNary Estates garage sale. They only have it one day a year and this year 97 families were participating. We still had Kathy's pick up (did I mention she rocks for letting us use this?). The first thing I snagged were a set of these chairs:
$10 each or $35 for all 4, heck ya man! They are so comfortable. I saw them, picked one up to check the weight (nice and heavy), sat in it and said "I'll take it." Brain later told me he was looking at them, but before he even got a chance to look at the price he heard me say I'll take it. This is proof you CAN NOT mess around people. If you want it you must go for the kill! Of course if there is no one else around totally look like you don't want it because then you can talk to the price down. But these were way cheap, so it was all good.
This masterpiece was hand painted by the old woman's cousin. I love the frame, and was just going to use it for that (that is green velvet you see in there), but I kinda like the sorta paint by numbers feel of this thing. Of course the real find in these peoples driveway was what Brain got. Now Brian just got a cell phone like three days before this sale and the first call I get from him on it is, "are you getting the truck?" No, I said, I put the chairs on hold after I paid for them. I was like, well did you get something big, and he was all excited and said yes. So I walked up the street and found Brain walking back holding a portable piano in a bear hug and Melissa right behind with a box of parts for it. He told me excitedly that it was Wurlitzer piano. I told him he could just leave it, have them mark sold on it, and come back for it. He said, "I'm not leaving it!" as if I was crazy. He later told me that he likes to get away with something fast if it feels like he's stealing it. He paid $50.00 for this. It's the same model that is played in the movie Ray (so Brian tells me). So ya, he was excited.
Exciting for me is this little camera kit. I have two cool old cameras now. I bought both purely for their decorative value so I can set up this little vignette I have in my head of my travel pictures and souvenirs. By the way these things go for next to nothing on eBay if you're wanting to do the same thing.
Sorry this picture is so fuzzy, bad light. It's a vintage set of Childcraft books. Blair picked up a set like this last month, and I've been wanting one ever since. I was going to wait though, but how could I pass up the full 15 book set for 5 bucks? I also got this huge roll of binding stuff, some clasps and mega ultra huge stencils when I finally get my craft room up and running.
And the other things. A one dollar rain jacket, two blankets for five. I realized last night as I stumbled cold to my mom's linen closet that I had not extra blankets for these kinds of incidents, so these will work out nicely. Plus they are lime green. Can't beat it! The basket was thrown in for free, and the jar is a cool square one for a future special collection.
I'm probably done with the thrifting for a bit, I need to get settled and see what I still need. I know I'm still looking for a few random things, like more pots and pans (hard to find in really good condition), and paring knifes (I have zero, and I love them). And I should actually stock up on some boring things like yard tools. Oh but maybe I could paint their handles all cute hmm....
