Okay people are you ready for some serious bathroom cuteness? First let's take a look back at the nastiness that once was:
People if this isn't nastiness I don't know what is. I mean, the counter tops were spray painted pink with textured paint. And that was only because they were trying to cover up rotted laminate underneath. The whole thing was a horrid beige color, which we have established I just do not appreciate, and the fixtures were, well right out of the seventies. A "new" style knob was put on to replace the glass one, and the counter had coppery colored knobs and hinges. Plus a bunch of other stuff that bugged me. I had everything planned for the house when I bought it, except for this bathroom. I just shut the door and made it an, "I'll deal with it later." But after deciding I couldn't afford to re-do the whole thing completely I knew something had to be done so I could move it. So here it is:
Same floor (I was too nervous to see what was underneath it, plus everything would have to be pulled up and lowered - toilet, counter, etc.). The glass knobs are the same as all the built in from the rest of the house to pull it together. If the cabinet paint looks familiar it should, it's the same as my kitchen. And the wall paint is that same formula halved (my mom's idea, she's a genius people).
I got a new sink and facet with the idea that if I ever did really upgrade this thing they could go into the new one too. The cute little container hold my tampons (hehehe, I love it when guys are like, hey what's this?) and it's a cool old coffee tin from Sciarrino's mom. Bill really saved the day by tiling the countertop for me. It was inexpensive white tile and it really makes the whole cabinet thing look nice and fresh.
I had the soap dish and took the small mirror from my mom's. The bigger mirror from the first pic was something I already had too, it was over the fireplace at my old townhouse. The little hobnail dish was $10 at a second had store. That along with my medicine cabinet hold most everything I need to get ready:
The medicine cabinet was already here, but it was put in after all the other built ins (I think) and stood out since it was painted a greenish beige and had a weird knob. I painted it the same color as all the other built-ins and gave it a small version of the glass knobs that are in the whole house. The green is pieces of depression glass from a collection my grandma put together for me. The little Pyrex is something Sciarrino gave me a few years ago. And yes, I do unplug my electric toothbrush every day so I don't have to look at the cord. I'm anal.
The shower curtain is from Anthropology and is on loan from Sciarrino. My grandma got me nice new white towels and this bathmat. I found the bath caddy after a considerable hunt on Amazon. No place had it locally, and it was less than $20 shipped so you can't beat that. I'm so over the ones that go in the corner, had those all through college. And my shower head is so low something over that would look silly (when I say low, I mean low. I'm 5'3" and I have to bend back to get my head under it).
I replaced the shower head with a low flow version (I was laughing my ass off the first time I took a shower in here, the stupid thing just about ripped my nipples off). My plummer helped me take off the old bathtub stuff so that I could clean it really well. If you haven't done this and are living in an old house try it, it makes such a difference. Then I re-caulked around all of it. And I spent a day pulling out all the old caulking around the whole tub surround. Do you know how long this takes, ahhhh so long. But I had to do it because it was almond colored, and water was starting to leak through it. My only word of caution about this is check to see if your tub has been re-glazed. I didn't realized mine had until halfway through the project and it's hard because it's not actually the porcelain you are scraping against, but the glazing, so you can like knick it.
It's hard to take a picture of lights, but trust me this is cute. My electrician put it in, and the fan. I patched the holes from the "saggy breasts" fixture that was there before. The bathroom really looks a lot cleaner because of the awesome new ceiling paint.
Because I prefer the "right hand wipe" I had to move the toilet paper holder over. The old one had been cut into the wall so I used my new sheet-rocking skills to patch the hole. What a handy thing to know how to do. The access panel on the other side had to stay, but I painted the cover the same color and it's really not that noticeable.
The hardware is all from Home Depot, I think it's their "Pegasus" collection. I like the towel bar on the back of the door because it's much neater. The robe hook is on the wall for a towel while I'm in the shower, there was no other place to hang it, but I think it works. Rick the wonderful electrician put the fan and light on separate switches so I don't have to have both going. And the last thing I was waiting on before I showed you this thing was the door knob. The room has been knob-less for a while because I just couldn't bring myself to put the ugly one back on. And I had an extra glass knob from the hallway door I removed. So I finally got a locksmith over here to make it work last week. There has to be a big rose (the plate behind the knob) to cover the hole that was drilled for the modern knob, but it works, and it's original so I like that. Finally:
The trim. Dave the carpenter has been here three days this last week to help me finish things up. This was already primed when I bought it at Home Depot, and I painted it before it was installed. Then touched up after.
Here's a run down on my $785 bathroom re-do
Paint and supplies: $50
Sink and Facet: about $250
Light and fan: $150
Trim: $50
Hardware (hinges, knobs, towel bars, etc): $150
Shower head: $15
Accessories (container, plastic drawers for cupboard, bath caddy): $50
Tile and supplies: $70
I need to go through my receipts, but that's pretty close. That's the most by far of any room, but worth every penny I think.
